Alligator and BabiesMother Alligator and Babies

This large reptile was spotted just below the raised boardwalk at Sawgrass Lake Park in central Florida. If you look closely in the lower right corner you can see the black and orange stripes of two of the babies. We spotted 16 babies within a few yards of their mother but the thick brush all around made it difficult to get good photos of the other babies. A female alligator will lay between 20 and 50 eggs at one time and lovingly care for her offspring until they are able to feed themselves, around one year of age. How convenient of Mama Alligator to lay her eggs so near the boardwalk so that all us humans can admire, don’t you agree?
