From our apartment balcony on our trip to Paris in May 2016 we could see the evening lights of the famous Sacre Coeur Cathedral (see image below).
The construction of Sacre Coeur was finished in 1914, taking some 40 years to complete. The English translation refers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and his divine love for humanity. The top of Montmartre hillock has long been a place of worship. Roman temples were built in this area, and it is theorized that the Druids before them also used this hill as a place of worship.
The Cathedral’s huge domes stand proudly while annually millions of visitors wander through its ostentatious interior. Two equestrian statues of French national saints, Jeanne D’Arc (Joan of Arc) and King Saint Louis IX, stand on guard above the facade over the expansive entrance.
Much more about Montmartre and other things Parisienne in future blog entries.
